About Sterile Petri Dishes
Julius Richard Petri, a German bacteriologist and inventor (1852–1921), is honored by the Sterile Petri dish. As a medical colleague and innovative microbiologist Robert Koch (1843–1910)'s assistant, Petri submitted a paper titled "A minor modification of the plating technique of Koch" in 1887. Compared to Koch's bell jar, Petri's seemingly insignificant improvement-a slightly bigger glass lid-reduced contamination from airborne germs.
